From the Colonial Music Institute on Defenders’ Day, September 14, 2017:

This morning is the 203rd anniversary of Francis Scott Key’s inspiration for our national anthem,
that is, witnessing Old Glory aloft over Fort McHenry after an
unsuccessful 25-hour bombardment by the British in 1814.

Today is the official publication date for Musical Maryland: A History of Song and Performance from the Colonial Period to the Age of Radio and invite you to explore its contents, enjoy some recorded examples, and, hopefully, purchase a copy for yourself or your institution’s library as per the links below. Please also note the schedule of variously related lectures, concerts, and signings beginning with tonight’s program in Frederick, Maryland, Key’s home town and burial place.

Happy 203rd everyone and all that day meant to American music history!
